INFORMATION UNDER RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT 2005

Objective of the right to Information Act - 2005

The Right to Information Act (RTI Act) of 2005 in India was introduced with several key objectives aimed at fostering transparency, accountability, and citizen empowerment in the functioning of government. Some of the main objectives of the RTI Act in India include:

1.Promoting Transparency: The RTI Act aims to promote transparency by providing citizens with the right to access information held by public authorities. This transparency helps in reducing corruption, enhancing trust in government institutions, and improving overall governance.
2.Empowering Citizens: By granting citizens the right to seek information from public authorities, the RTI Act empowers them to actively participate in the democratic process. It enables citizens to make informed decisions, hold public officials accountable, and advocate for their rights and interests.
3.Ensuring Accountability: The Act seeks to ensure accountability among public officials and institutions by enabling citizens to scrutinize their actions and decisions. Public authorities are obligated to provide information requested under the RTI Act, thus reducing the likelihood of arbitrary decision-making and misuse of power.
4.Enhancing Good Governance: Through increased transparency and accountability, the RTI Act contributes to the promotion of good governance practices. It encourages efficient and effective decision-making, fosters public trust in government institutions, and promotes the rule of law.
5.Protecting Fundamental Rights: Access to information is recognized as a fundamental right essential for the protection and promotion of other rights. The RTI Act helps safeguard citizens’ rights to freedom of speech and expression, right to life, right to education, and other fundamental freedoms by enabling them to access relevant information.
6.Facilitating Development: By promoting transparency and accountability, the RTI Act facilitates development efforts by ensuring that government policies and programs are implemented effectively and efficiently. Citizens can access information related to developmental initiatives, enabling them to actively participate in and contribute to the development process.

Overall, the objectives of the Right to Information Act in India aim to strengthen democracy, improve governance, and empower citizens to actively engage with the government in the pursuit of their rights and interests.
